Nothing, right? Exactly, nothing. My name is Joe Carlos, and I am one of the Admissions Counselors at UGA. Working in Undergraduate Admissions for the University of Georgia, I have fielded countless calls of nervous prospective students who have been deferred, and they all seem to have the same tone of defeatism in their questions. A decision of deferral is by no means a decision of denial here at the University of Georgia. In Undergraduate Admissions at UGA, there are three answers that one can receive from the office of admissions; Accept (which is self-explanatory), Deny (which is self-explanatory) and Defer (which seems to need some more explanation). When our office defers a student, it means that we find the applicant academically sound, but based on the information that we have received from the student in the early action application, we need additional info to make a final admissions decision. If a student is denied, barring a successful appeal, a student has no chance of attending UGA the following fall. If a student is deferred, we are saying that we are very interested in that student attending UGA, but we want to know more about the student than simply their grades, classes and standardized test scores before a decision can be made. Think of it this waywouldnt you rather submit an application that was stronger? In other words, dont you find that it would be more beneficial to you to have an application that showcases your talents outside of the classroom, your myriad of accomplishments and your involvement in diverse areas of extra-curriculars and service? When we ask a student to complete part II of the application we are essentially asking for an application that gives us a better idea or understanding of the student themselves, and not simply their numbers. So tell us about playing lacrosse, or being a part of Interact, or that mission trip you went on last summer, because when you are deferred, you now have the space to do so. You also have the opportunity to take an additional SAT or ACT if you want to as well. In addition to all of those other things, we also require a teacher recommendation (more space for someone to speak highly of you),part II with four short essays (to give us an even better understand ing of how you think and who you are), snd we suggest you send in your fall semester grades (because we know youre finishing senior year strong). When a student applies Early Action to UGA and they are deferred, its not to be seen as an end, but rather a beginning. That deferral is an opportunity to learn more about said student than we ever could have in the Early Action application. That deferral gives us a keen insight into the mind and personality of the applicant in ways we often times didnt know existed before. Last year, 50% of the students who were deferred in Early Action AND completed Part II of the application were later admitted to UGA. 0% of the students who decide not to complete Part II of the application are accepted. Deferral is not a four letter word no more than it is a final decision. Make the choice and embrace the opportunity. Embrace the opportunity to continue your pursuit of an education at UGA and turn it into a reality. Deferral is not a four letter word. Deny though, for most people, is.

I will be the first to admit that I am a sloppy editor where my own work is concerned. I often overlook mistakes that an editor would easily spot. I am not alone in this either, as it’s common for writers to miss mistakes in their own work because they are reading what should be there, and not what actually is there. You can often remedy this by reading slowly or by using the â€Å"Talk† function on your word processor to get you computer to read it back to you. But even then, mistakes can still go unnoticed, and some of these are caused by your spell checker. If you know what mistakes to look out for, then you can fix them quickly. Depending on how you write, how quick you are and how sloppy you are, you’ll make some of these mistakes more than others, and you might have a particular one that you always make. The good thing is that there is an easy fix. Just hold down the CTRL key and press â€Å"F†. You can then click on â€Å"Find and Replace†, before entering the wrong word and then the right word. You can also use this to change punctuation. I once used it to convert double punctuation marks (American standard) to single ones (UK standard) in a novel of mine, and I also used it on a client’s novel to find instances where he had incorrectly used â€Å"its† instead of â€Å"it’s†, which is something that he did a lot. The point is, although they might seem amateurish to outsiders, we all have mistakes that we make much more than others, and usually they consist of one or more of the following: Saliva vs Salvia One of the very first novels I wrote had a few instances where I had used the word â€Å"Salvia† instead of â€Å"Saliva†. I worked with many first-time authors as a tutor on a creative writing course and this mistake was made by at least 25% of them. Chester Drawers vs Chest Of Drawers There are a surprising number of people who think that a unit of furniture that consists of several drawers is known as a â€Å"Chester Drawers†, perhaps assuming that it’s a brand name. It’s actually â€Å"Chest Of Drawers†, but don’t worry, I know at least one published (and very successful) author who used to think otherwise. Supposedly vs Supposably This seems to be more common in certain areas and even in certain countries, which suggests that it has a lot to do with dialect. Simply put, â€Å"Supposably† does not mean â€Å"Supposedly† and should not be used in its place. Or at all. It is a real word, which is why your spell checker won’t pick up on it. The problem is that the people who use it want to say â€Å"Supposedly†, either thinking that the two are the same, or simply mistaking one word for the other. You will find â€Å"Supposably† in the dictionary, but you will lose a lot of respect with your readers if you use it, even if you use it correctly. So, it’s best to avoid it. Kindergarten vs Kindergarden I have seen the word â€Å"Kindergarden† referred to as an Anglicized version of â€Å"Kindergarten†, which is a word with Germanic origin. However, many dictionaries don’t even recognize this and everyone seems to use â€Å"Kindergarten† anyway. I think that this mistake is more common here in the UK, where we don’t have Kindergarten and where the only references we have for it are from US TV shows and films. From there it is misheard and misunderstood, and the mistake spreads. Duct Tape vs Duck Tape Spell check will not tell you that â€Å"Duck Tape† is a mistake, because it’s still a real word. However, the word you’re looking for is â€Å"Duct Tape†. It’s not quite that simple though and it’s easy to see why this mistake is so common. Perhaps exploiting this misunderstanding, there is a brand of duct tape that goes under the name Duck Tape, and the very first time this tape was used, back in the Second World War, it was known by the nickname â€Å"Duck Tape†. Still, that doesn’t make it anymore correct and the term is definitely â€Å"Duct Tape†. Poor Word Choice When it comes to using the wrong word, the most common mistake I encounter is simply poor word choice. This is far more common in novice authors, as they try their best to use as many words as possible and inevitably end up using many words that don’t fit. A few examples: He entered the room and noticed the stench of sweet roses â€Å"Stench† means â€Å"Bad Smell† and has â€Å"Stink† as a synonym, so it’s not to be used where pleasant smells are concerned. â€Å"Smell† or â€Å"Fragrance† would be better. He teetered happily along the path Don’t assume that all synonyms for â€Å"Walk† or â€Å"Run† apply. Writers often make this mistake, picking a word that sounds good as opposed to one that fits the scene they’re trying to describe. In this case â€Å"Teeter† means to walk unsteadily, and unless he’s drunk or injured, this will not fit. In general, you should avoid searching for synonyms and using words that you don’t know just because they sound good. Not only can this lead to words that don’t fit and sentences that don’t make sense, as mentioned above, but it can also lead to archaic words being used, and words that your readers just won’t understand. All over the world status hierarchy and social class are a common concept of how well we live our lives, however they affect our lives more than we think. Social class can affect many things such as education, opportunities presented to us, economic factors, and even our health. Recently socioeconomic status effects on health has become a more popular topic of discussion but is nothing new to researchers. â€Å"Research on socioeconomic inequalities in health in the UK has a long history. In the early part of the 20th century the British government introduced questions on occupation in the decennial census. Being in a certain class affects your health and even the type of health care yo u receive. Males in a higher social class live on average 9 years longer than males in more deprived areas or lower social classes and are in â€Å"good health† for 85 percent of their lives compared to 70 percent (Knott, Dr Laurence..). I believe social class affects health because of things such as living conditions, lack of resources for health care and education, and that lower class people prefer and are fine with less healthy lifestyles. People in higher classes are usually very successful and motivated in most aspect of life while people in lower classes may not be. I don’t think there is much we can do to resolve this problem as most of these problems are dependent on each person’s life choices and not much will change if we cannot fix this problem. The police force was so uncoordinated for a situation like this, that even though they got there within minutes, they were unable to stop the rampage of the â€Å"Texas Tower Sniper† for over 90 minutes. It is even said that there was a large amount of luck involved in stopping him when they did. August 1 was the birth date of SWAT because it was on that day that Law Enforcement realized that they needed special plans for these types of situations. Though the police officers involved were undoubtedly performing to the best of their abilities, they did not have the type of tactical training or special weapons needed to quickly suppress this type of violent crime. This devastating massacre opened the eyes of America, and put a spot light on how truly vulnerable the everyday person really was. No one could feel safe if something didn’t change, for as Charles Whitman showed, even an honor student could create such a tragic scene. It was then that Chiefs of police decided that they needed to have teams of officers with equipment and training to carry out special plans for these types of incidents. In this day, 2010, our country would be devastated by deadly crime sprees without SWAT teams. SWAT teams are a necessity for the protection of innocent American citizens. One main reason why police officers are insufficient for carrying out SWAT duties is their training and abilities. SWAT officers are trained specifically to work as a team, usually consisting of four officers, to carry out their duties in the fastest way possible, with the absolute most organization in any given situation, and to do so with the very minimum number of casualties attainable. If one was to look, one would find that police officers are not qualified for even the very basic SWAT situation. There is no doubt in my mind that if police officers were not enough then, they are not enough now. It is especially critical that we don’t just depend on the police force now as we did back then do to the new technology. If the events of august 1st 1966 were to reoccur in the present with our new resources and improved arsenal, but no SWAT team, the outcome would be devastating. Imagine the number of casualties if a man went on a rampage today as happened on august 1st, but instead was equipped with assault rifles, sniper rifles, explosives, and even deadly chemical threats like anthrax. One burst of over a thousand bullets is fired so quickly that it sounds as if one bullet was shot. These automatic assault rifles fired close to six hundred rounds a minute, which doesn’t even come close to competing with the rate of fire of newly discovered weapons. With an unorganized and badly prepared police force, people may keep dying until the criminal runs out of ammunition and materials, and that is not expectable. With a SWAT team however, America can breathe a bit easier for many reasons. SWAT teams are trained specifically to prevent these certain tragedies, and they too have an adequate arsenal. His rich dress of robes glistens like flakes of gold around his neck, and emits an impression of warmth out of the cold and deep background.
